Upholstered kitchen chairs may become worn and stained from years of wear and tear. The great news is they aren’t that difficult to reupholster. Because the chairs differ in the way they’re upholstered, be careful to watch how it is done when you take them apart.
A few chairs might have an upholstered seat inside a frame, whereas others may be upholstered right over their frame. - Plywood (if needed)
- Sandpaper (if needed)
- Foam
- Fabric
- Glue
- Staples and staple gun

Directions to Reupholster Kitchen Chairs:
- Take off the existing seat. Depending upon how the chair was assembled to start with, you might have the ability to carefully trim the adhesive surrounding the seat and then take it off. It might need to be pried in some sort of way. After you take it off, clean the frame up that it either sits in or on. If there’s glue on the frame, softly sand it off.
- Remove the cushion and fabric from the seat’s base. If the base is in good condition, it’s possible to reuse it. If it is not, you may use it as a template in order to trim a fresh piece of wood. Thin plywood is going to work fine.
- Trim a piece of the fabric three inches larger than the chair’s seat. Trim a foam piece just a tad larger than the chair’s base. Place a bit of glue on the foam piece, then stick it to the base.
- Put the fabric piece over the foam, then turn it upside down. Place a bit of glue on the outside corner (around an inch in) of its base. Pull a side of the fabric over, then staple it into place. Then, pull the additional side so it’s tight, then staple. Next, repeat halfway between every one of the staples. You can work around the whole seat, pulling the seat tight, and then stapling.
- Place a bead of wood glue around the seat’s frame, then set the freshly upholstered seat inside the frame. Put a few heavy books upon the seat in order to press them onto the glue ‘til it becomes dry.
