DIY Armchair Slipcover

A bold armchair in a striking color or design can up the ante on any room. However, luxurious armchairs can come with a price tag to match. If you’re familiar with sewing machines, you can make DIY chair covers that suit your style, family, and budget.

Old, worn-out chairs hang around nearly every antique and secondhand store, so if you find one in the shape you want, consider it a new project.

For this project, all you will need is fabric, pins, and a sewing machine. First, you will want to find the fabric that fits your vision. If you’re a novice sewer, a slightly more durable fabric or a fabric that you’re not worried about working with will suit you best. Be sure to check our sale section and different fabric types. When you’re done, shop our pillows or cushions for a one-of-a-kind accent.

Here is how you create your armchair slipcovers:

1.) Roughly cut pieces of your fabric that are larger than the areas you will cover.

2.) Begin pinning each area into small sections. You will want your fabric to be inside-out for this part.

3.) Once all areas are pinned together and fitted how you want them to be, carefully pull the fabric off the chair.

4.) Sew the sections together and cut off the excess fabric.

5.) Place the cover on the chair to ensure everything fits how you want it to. Some areas may need to be re-stitched and hand-sewn, so check over all the seams and edges.

After that, you’re done! You will have a removable armchair slipcover that can be washed and easily changed out next time you want to make another slipcover. You can double the fabric for matching slipcovers or use the pieces you cut for a pattern to cover another chair. However you choose to do it, slipcovers for chairs look beautiful and are much simpler to put together than they seem.
